Virtual teams exist across physical and cultural boundaries. They share a common purpose, while mainly using web-based means of communicating and collaborating.

Managing virtual teams draws on different skills than those required for co-located teams. The obstacles to good communication include the nonverbal components of messages, lack of downtime for team members, multiple time zones and different languages. Moreover, trust-building is extremely challenging and quality control is difficult.
